The idea behind the cue
IR spectroscopy is especially useful for identifying functional-group vibrations. Carbonyl stretches are usually strong and sharp, often near 1700 cm⁻¹, but their exact position shifts with conjugation, ring strain, and substituents. IR is a guide to functional groups, not a complete structure solution by itself.

Short & simple
Find the skyscraper spike before looking anywhere else.
Acronym
GCC — Glittery Cats Cackle.
Story
A detective walks into a factory and hears one glass shard screeching above the rest. That lone, sharp scream near the top of the chart is the carbonyl clue; the other bumps are just background chatter.

Know the limits
IR is best for major functional-group clues, not for fully distinguishing close isomers alone.

Which IR feature most strongly suggests a carbonyl-containing compound?
A. A single absorption near 3000 cm⁻¹ that is always from carbonyls
B. A strong, sharp absorption near 1700 cm⁻¹
C. A broad absorption near 3300 cm⁻¹
D. A weak set of bands only in the fingerprint region
Reveal explanation
A strong, sharp absorption near 1700 cm⁻¹
Carbonyl groups commonly give a strong, sharp IR stretch near 1700 cm⁻¹. The other options describe alcohol/amine O-H or N-H regions, fingerprint-region complexity, or an incorrect assignment.
