Growth starts at the head and moves downward.
The idea behind the cue
Cephalocaudal growth is the general developmental pattern in which growth and motor control proceed from the head downward. Infants usually gain head control before trunk control and trunk control before lower-body coordination. It helps explain why early infant proportions and skills are top-heavy.

Short & simple
Growth starts at the head and moves downward.
Acronym
HTL — Hiccupping Tacos Lounge.
Story
A baby’s head looks oversized, the neck steadies first, then the trunk, arms, and legs gradually catch up. The body seems assembled from top to bottom like a snowman built in order.
Connect the pieces
- H (Hiccupping) → Head control: Growth and motor control begin at the head, so infants gain head control first.
- T (Tacos) → Trunk control: After the head, control moves downward to the trunk and torso.
- L (Lounge) → Leg coordination: Lower-body coordination comes later, so legs and feet are controlled after head and trunk.
