A metal clamp pins DNA so the helix cannot move.
The idea behind the cue
Cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin form DNA adducts and crosslinks that distort the helix. This interferes with replication and transcription and triggers cell death.

Short & simple
A metal clamp pins DNA so the helix cannot move.
Acronym
PDHC — Purple Donuts Hide Cupcakes.
Story
A shiny metal clamp snaps onto the DNA rope and bends it into a knot. RNA polymerase bumps into the knot, backs up, and the cell stops copying.
Connect the pieces
- P (Purple) → Platinum compounds: Cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin are platinum-based chemotherapy drugs.
- D (Donuts) → DNA adducts: They covalently bind DNA, creating adducts and crosslinks.
- H (Hide) → Helix distortion: Those adducts and crosslinks bend the DNA helix and interfere with replication and transcription.
- C (Cupcakes) → Cell death: The damaged DNA can trigger cell death.
- Purple · Platinum compounds: Cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin are platinum-based chemotherapy drugs.
- Donuts · DNA adducts: They covalently bind DNA, creating adducts and crosslinks.
- Hide · Helix distortion: Those adducts and crosslinks bend the DNA helix and interfere with replication and transcription.
- Cupcakes · Cell death: The damaged DNA can trigger cell death.
Know the limits
Platinum compounds are a subset of DNA-damaging chemotherapy, not all alkylators in the strict chemical sense.

Reveal explanation
Form DNA adducts and crosslinks
Platinum agents bind DNA and create adducts/crosslinks that disrupt replication and transcription.
