Tiny scissors snip open the antibiotic hoop.
The idea behind the cue
Many bacteria resist beta-lactams by producing beta-lactamases, enzymes that hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring and inactivate the drug. Some beta-lactamase inhibitors protect susceptible partner drugs, but not every beta-lactamase is covered by every inhibitor.

Short & simple
Tiny scissors snip open the antibiotic hoop.
Acronym
BIM — Bouncy Impala Moonwalk.
Story
A bacterium wears a tiny forge and snips the ring off incoming medicine before it can reach the wall builders. The drug arrives as a crumpled hoop and cannot work.
Connect the pieces
- B (Bouncy) → Beta-lactamase: Many bacteria resist beta-lactams by making enzymes that hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring.
- I (Impala) → Inhibitor: Some beta-lactamase inhibitors protect partner drugs, but not every beta-lactamase is covered.
- M (Moonwalk) → Mechanism: Other resistance mechanisms include altered PBPs or reduced entry, not just beta-lactamase.

Know the limits
This is a major resistance mechanism for many, but not all, beta-lactams; some organisms also resist by altered PBPs or reduced entry.

Which resistance mechanism most directly inactivates penicillins and cephalosporins by breaking a structural feature of the drug?
A. Target overproduction
B. PABA supplementation
C. Beta-lactamase production
D. Ribosomal methylation
Reveal explanation
Beta-lactamase production
Beta-lactamases hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring, directly inactivating the drug.
