Sugar gets chopped into pyruvate with a small ATP profit
The idea behind the cue
Glycolysis converts one glucose to two pyruvate in the cytosol. It uses ATP early, makes ATP later by substrate-level phosphorylation, and produces NADH. The net payoff is small but rapid and does not require oxygen directly.

Short & simple
Sugar gets chopped into pyruvate with a small ATP profit
Acronym
GPAN — Glittery Pancakes Applaud Noodles.
Story
A sugar loaf is split by tiny cafeteria workers into two pyruvate lunch boxes. They spend a little ATP up front, then collect more back later, ending with a modest profit and a pair of NADH receipts.
Connect the pieces
- G (Glittery) → Glucose: One glucose is the starting fuel for glycolysis in the cytosol.
- P (Pancakes) → Pyruvate: Glycolysis ends with two pyruvate molecules.
- A (Applaud) → ATP: ATP is spent early and made later, so the net ATP payoff is small but fast.
- N (Noodles) → NADH: NADH is produced, and glycolysis does not require oxygen directly.
- Glittery · Glucose: One glucose is the starting fuel for glycolysis in the cytosol.
- Pancakes · Pyruvate: Glycolysis ends with two pyruvate molecules.
- Applaud · ATP: ATP is spent early and made later, so the net ATP payoff is small but fast.
- Noodles · NADH: NADH is produced, and glycolysis does not require oxygen directly.

What is the net product set of glycolysis from one glucose molecule?
A. 2 acetyl-CoA, 2 net ATP, 2 NADPH
B. 2 lactate, 4 net ATP, 2 FADH2
C. 1 pyruvate, 1 net ATP, 1 NADH
D. 2 pyruvate, 2 net ATP, 2 NADH
Reveal explanation
2 pyruvate, 2 net ATP, 2 NADH
Glycolysis yields 2 pyruvate, a net 2 ATP, and 2 NADH per glucose. Acetyl-CoA is formed later by pyruvate dehydrogenase, and NADPH is mainly from the pentose phosphate pathway.
