Membrane thermostat with a tiny waistcoat
The idea behind the cue
Cholesterol buffers membrane fluidity: it decreases fluidity at high temperatures by restraining phospholipid movement and prevents tight packing at low temperatures by disrupting crystallization. It also reduces permeability to small polar molecules.

Short & simple
Membrane thermostat with a tiny waistcoat
Acronym
BWCP — Bouncy Walruses Chase Pancakes.
Story
A chilly restaurant has a maître d’ wearing a vest. When dancers get too packed and stiff, he loosens the crowd. When they get too wild, he steps in and keeps them from spreading out too much.
Connect the pieces
- B (Bouncy) → Buffering: Cholesterol smooths out extremes in membrane fluidity across temperatures.
- W (Walruses) → Warm: At high temperatures it restrains phospholipid movement, preventing the membrane from getting too fluid.
- C (Chase) → Cold: At low temperatures it prevents tight packing and crystallization, keeping the membrane from freezing stiff.
- P (Pancakes) → Permeability: It also lowers membrane permeability to small polar molecules.
- Bouncy · Buffering: Cholesterol smooths out extremes in membrane fluidity across temperatures.
- Walruses · Warm: At high temperatures it restrains phospholipid movement, preventing the membrane from getting too fluid.
- Chase · Cold: At low temperatures it prevents tight packing and crystallization, keeping the membrane from freezing stiff.
- Pancakes · Permeability: It also lowers membrane permeability to small polar molecules.

What is a key role of cholesterol in animal membranes?
A. It replaces all membrane proteins
B. It forms the hydrophilic heads of phospholipids
C. It buffers membrane fluidity across temperature changes
D. It creates peptide channels for ions
Reveal explanation
It buffers membrane fluidity across temperature changes
Cholesterol stabilizes membrane fluidity by preventing too much rigidity at low temperatures and too much fluidity at high temperatures.
