Count protons, not vibes, to name the atom
The idea behind the cue
Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus. It uniquely defines the element. Changing electrons makes an ion, and changing neutrons makes an isotope, but neither changes the element’s identity.

Short & simple
Count protons, not vibes, to name the atom
Acronym
PI — Polka Impala.
Story
A tiny bouncer checks an atom’s wristband. Every time the proton count changes, a different element slips into the club. Electrons can swap jackets all day; the bouncer only counts protons.
Connect the pieces
- P (Polka) → Protons: Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus, and that proton count uniquely identifies the element.
- I (Impala) → Identity: Changing electrons makes an ion, and changing neutrons makes an isotope, but the element stays the same unless the proton number changes.
- Polka · Protons: Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus, and that proton count uniquely identifies the element.
- Impala · Identity: Changing electrons makes an ion, and changing neutrons makes an isotope, but the element stays the same unless the proton number changes.
Know the limits
This applies to neutral atoms and ions alike; only proton number changes the element.

A. B. Number of neutrons
B. C. Number of electrons
C. D. Number of valence shells
D. A. Number of protons
Reveal explanation
A. Number of protons
An element is defined by its proton count, which is its atomic number. Neutrons create isotopes; electrons create ions.
