Tiny lung balloons swap oxygen for carbon dioxide.
The idea behind the cue
Gas exchange occurs across the thin alveolar-capillary membrane by diffusion. Oxygen moves from higher alveolar concentration to blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from blood to alveolar air.

Short & simple
Tiny lung balloons swap oxygen for carbon dioxide.
Acronym
TOCD — Tapdancing Owls Chase Donuts.
Story
At a crowded balloon fair, oxygen steps from the alveolus into the blood while carbon dioxide slips out of the capillary into the air space.
Connect the pieces
- T (Tapdancing) → Thin membrane: Gas exchange happens across the very thin alveolar-capillary membrane.
- O (Owls) → Oxygen diffusion: Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the blood.
- C (Chase) → Carbon dioxide diffusion: Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli.
- D (Donuts) → Diffusion gradient: Both gases move by diffusion down their concentration gradients under normal resting conditions.
- Tapdancing · Thin membrane: Gas exchange happens across the very thin alveolar-capillary membrane.
- Owls · Oxygen diffusion: Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the blood.
- Chase · Carbon dioxide diffusion: Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli.
- Donuts · Diffusion gradient: Both gases move by diffusion down their concentration gradients under normal resting conditions.
Know the limits
Applies to normal resting exchange; disease and high altitude can reduce efficiency.

Where does gas exchange between air and blood primarily occur?
A. Trachea and bronchi
B. Pleural cavity and diaphragm
C. Left atrium and left ventricle
D. Alveoli and surrounding pulmonary capillaries
Reveal explanation
Alveoli and surrounding pulmonary capillaries
The alveoli have thin walls and dense capillary networks, making them the main site of respiratory gas exchange.
