Deoxygenated blood takes the scenic route through the lungs.
The idea behind the cue
Venous blood enters the right atrium, moves to the right ventricle, goes to the lungs via pulmonary arteries, returns oxygenated to the left atrium, then the left ventricle, and exits through the aorta. This route separates pulmonary and systemic circulation.

Short & simple
Deoxygenated blood takes the scenic route through the lungs.
Acronym
VRRPLL — Vampire Robots Ride Purple Lollipops Loudly.
Story
A blue suitcase enters the right atrium, rides to the right ventricle, takes a lung detour for fresh oxygen, then returns to the left heart and heads to the body.
Connect the pieces
- V (Vampire) → Venous return: Venous blood enters the right atrium in normal postnatal circulation.
- R (Robots) → Right atrium: The right atrium passes that blood on to the right ventricle.
- R (Ride) → Right ventricle: The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries.
- P (Purple) → Pulmonary arteries: These vessels carry blood to the lungs, where it gets oxygenated and then returns to the left atrium.
- L (Lollipops) → Left atrium: The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and sends it to the left ventricle.
- L (Loudly) → Left ventricle: The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta for systemic circulation, keeping the pulmonary and systemic circuits separate.
- Vampire · Venous return: Venous blood enters the right atrium in normal postnatal circulation.
- Robots · Right atrium: The right atrium passes that blood on to the right ventricle.
- Ride · Right ventricle: The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary arteries.
- Purple · Pulmonary arteries: These vessels carry blood to the lungs, where it gets oxygenated and then returns to the left atrium.
- Lollipops · Left atrium: The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and sends it to the left ventricle.
- Loudly · Left ventricle: The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta for systemic circulation, keeping the pulmonary and systemic circuits separate.
Know the limits
Describes normal postnatal circulation; fetal shunts are a developmental exception.

Which sequence correctly traces blood flow through the heart and lungs?
A. Left ventricle → lungs → right ventricle → left atrium → right atrium
B. Right ventricle → right atrium → lungs → left ventricle → left atrium
C. Right atrium → right ventricle → lungs → left atrium → left ventricle
D. Right atrium → left atrium → lungs → right ventricle → left ventricle
Reveal explanation
Right atrium → right ventricle → lungs → left atrium → left ventricle
This is the standard path of blood: right heart to lungs, then left heart to the body.
